Founded in 1977 by Barbara Luderowski and Michael Olijnyk in a former Stearns & Foster mattress warehouse on Pittsburgh's North Side, the Mattress Factory is a museum of contemporary art devoted exclusively to room-sized installations and site-specific work. The residency program brings artists in to create new installations on-site, with full institutional support — fabrication, technical assistance, and exhibition in the museum's spaces, where works often stay on view for years and become part of the permanent collection. Notable alumni include Yayoi Kusama, James Turrell, Allan Wexler, and Greer Lankton.
