Founded in 1985 during apartheid as a space for cross-racial artistic exchange, Thupelo is one of Africa's most historically significant artist workshops. Now an annual 2-week intensive residency, it brings together 20–30 South African and international artists for collaborative, non-hierarchical artmaking. Materials, accommodation, and meals are provided. The program emphasizes process over product and has been a formative experience for generations of Southern African artists.
