ACAC (Aomori Contemporary Art Centre) is a public arts center run by Aomori Public University in northern Honshu, surrounded by forest at the edge of the city. The international artist-in-residence program hosts 4–6 artists per year for 2–3 month stays, providing a private studio, accommodation, a stipend, and access to ACAC's exhibition spaces and wood/metal workshops. The remote, snowy northern Japan setting — near the Shirakami Mountains UNESCO site — and the program's emphasis on community engagement give it a distinctive character.
